Early childhood development and cognitive development in developing countries: Evidence brief

The Department for International Development in the UK has released a evidence brief that reviews assembled evidence to determine how, why and under what conditions Early Childhood Development (ECD) interventions are effective in promoting cognitive development of children living in low and middle income countries (LMICs). ECD interventions include:

  • programmes for children under three years and their families
  • informal and formal services for children ranging from 3 to 6 years, which aim to prepare the child for formal primary education
  • support for children in the early grades of primary school

This brief provides an overview of key evidence to assist policy makers and researchers in assessing the research in this field.
