Four Million Fewer Children Dying

The UN Millennium Development Goals have ensured an increase in health interventions in developing countries. While the world has not met the target goal of reducing child deaths by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015, there has been a decrease of more than four million deaths worldwide last year than in 2000. This decrease is as a result of a drop in cases of pneumonia, diarrhea, death during birth, malaria and measles.

The biggest contributor has bee the mass vaccination campaigns by the WHO and other bodies. These campaigns are responsible for a 79 percent fall in the number of deaths from measles over the last 15 years. The disease is easy and cheap to prevent, so a 100 percent fall is possible once government officials make it a priority to get every child immunized.

While the MDGs are expected to come to an end this year, the initiative will continue in hopes that the goal will one day be realized.
